Some events on the race calendar are just races. Others are rites of passage. The Battle of the Bay, hosted for 15 years by the incredible team at BaySUP, firmly belongs in the latter category.

It’s an event steeped in the history of UK SUP racing, a cornerstone of the inaugural 2014 National Series, and a name that has always been synonymous with a true, hardcore test of coastal paddling skill.
The 2025 edition was no exception; it was a day that pushed our organisation, our safety teams, and most importantly, our paddlers, to their absolute limits. And in doing so, it has sharpened our focus on the future.
The conditions on Saturday (28 June) were, to put it mildly, challenging.
What began as a moderate offshore breeze quickly escalated into 22mph gusts, transforming the race course into a complex and physically demanding arena.
For our race management team, it meant a day of constant evaluation, difficult decisions, and ultimately, prioritising the safety and wellbeing of every person on the water.
For our competitors, it was a test of a different kind.
It was incredible to witness so many paddlers, from seasoned pros to those on our Challenge Tour, making the brave decision to take to the start line.
In recent years, we have made a conscious decision to increase our operating window for events, pushing into stronger wind conditions to provide a greater challenge and reduce cancellations.
This inevitably means we will face days like at the Battle of the Bay.
What was so inspiring was seeing the spirit of our community shine through.
Paddler after paddler, whether they completed one lap or three, came ashore having pushed their personal boundaries in a safe and controlled environment.
That, right there, is the essence of what we aim to foster: personal growth through challenge.
However, events like this also serve as a powerful catalyst for evolution.
The difficult decision to shorten the distance race and ultimately recall the fleet highlighted the limitations of traditional race management in extreme conditions.
While our team on the shoreline did a phenomenal job manually tracking and timing every competitor to produce a fair result, it underscored the need for a technological leap forward.
This is where our vision for the future comes into focus.
As we look towards 2026, we are preparing to launch our next major strategy: Join the Future.
This initiative is designed to set out a clear pathway for the growth of SUP racing in the UK, and at its core is the integration of GPS technology into our events.
Our experience at the Battle of the Bay has crystallised two key objectives:
- 1. Individual GPS Tracking: By equipping every racer with a small GPS device, we can move beyond the limitations of manual timing. In a scenario where a race must be altered or stopped, we could implement a “lap count back” system with pinpoint accuracy, taking each paddler’s time and position from the exact moment they crossed the last lap marker. This removes ambiguity and ensures the fairest possible outcome when conditions force our hand.
- 2. GPS-Located Buoys: The next step is to revolutionise how we set and manage our courses. GPS-located buoys, which hold their position via a small, automated propeller, would give us the ability to adjust a race course on the fly. Imagine being able to move a buoy to create a better downwind angle or shorten a leg of the course in response to a sudden change in conditions, all without deploying a safety boat and crew into a dangerous situation to manually lift and reset a heavy anchor. This technology would be a gamechanger for both safety and the quality of racing.
The Battle of the Bay 2025 will be remembered as a tough, wild, and challenging day on the water. But we will also remember it as the day that galvanised our commitment to innovation.
It was a powerful reminder that to grow and to provide the best possible experience for our competitors, we must embrace the future.
We are incredibly excited about the path ahead and look forward to you all joining us on this journey.
