They say food can bring people together, but for a group of Muslim girls, it was canoeing in the Lake District that forged new bonds. Ranging from just 5 years old to 23, these girls came together for an unforgettable adventure, proving that the great outdoors has a special way of uniting people.
When members of the Muslim Scouts Fellowship learned that Paddle UK was supporting an initiative for a canoeing and Ghyll scrambling trip in Coniston, the excitement was immediate, and tickets quickly sold out. The girls travelled from as far as Rotherham, Bradford, and York, starting their journey as early as 5:30 a.m. to make it to the Lake District.
The girls met their guides, Kris and Mark, who helped them get kitted up before heading to Coniston Lake. Despite the windy day, the sun was shining, making the paddling around the headland both challenging and exhilarating. The girls quickly adapted, steering away from the white-tipped waves to find a calmer, more beautiful section of the lake. They were delighted to spot an abundance of water life, which seemed to come close just to say “Salaam.”
It was nice to see the girls comfortably participating in the sport, with some wearing Jubbas and hijabs. Their attire didn’t make paddling difficult; instead, it was lovely to see them enjoying the adventure in the clothing they love, blending their tradition with the thrill of the experience.
After a sunlit lunch, the group prepared for Ghyll scrambling. Even the youngest in the group displayed remarkable bravery as they scrambled up the powerful river, jumping from rock to rock. The sense of teamwork within the group was evident as they held hands, supporting one another through the challenging terrain.
By the end of the day, the girls had not only conquered the outdoors but also gained a significant boost in confidence. The girls shared that it was their best outdoor activity to date, with the added bonus of making new friends along the way.
A huge thank you to Paddle UK for making this day of paddling, friendship, and adventure possible.
Thanks to Saira for sharing her story, we hope to hear lots more stories of the group enjoying paddlesports!
