The London assembly committee has put forward a number of recommendations to increase the cleanliness of the capital’s waterways, and offer more access to the outdoors.
Paddle UK was a panel member on Environment Committee’s investigation on Swimmable Rivers, in 2024.
During discussions, Ben Seal, Head of Access and Environment at Paddle UK, urged the Mayor to speak with people who already use rivers, including paddlers.
Ben also pushed for support for better testing and communication of information about water quality, particularly in areas that are already commonly used for water sports.
Following the meetings, the ‘Swimmable rivers: Towards clean and healthy waterways in London’ report has been published.
Twelve recommendations have been suggested to improve the city’s rivers and waterways.
Four new bathing water sites have been suggested by 2028, and a further six by 2034, across London, and starting with existing recreational areas.
The report also said supervised bathing sites should be promoted, and improving water safety awareness are also part among the recommendations.
