The Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross World Championships began early this morning with the kayak cross individual time trials, and Great Britain’s athletes made an immediate impact on the global stage.
All six team members secured their spots in Saturday’s heats, with Joe Clarke MBE opening the medal tally by claiming silver.
Clarke graced the podium in second place, finishing just 1.12 seconds behind the Spanish frontrunner.
Joe’s time trial form underlines him as one of the leading contenders heading into the knockout rounds.
“The run was pretty good, there was obviously some time in it,” says Joe.
“To start the competition on a high note is exactly what we came here to do and I’m really happy.”

Teammate Jonny Dickson showcased his speed, recording the third-fastest split during the second section before crossing the line in sixth position with a time of 57.27.
Nikita Setchell also laid down a confident run, earning eighth place and progressing comfortably into the heats.
Kimberley Woods put down a solid foundation to build from going into the knockout stages on Saturday, finishing in 15th place.
“I didn’t have the start that I wanted, didn’t have the ups I wanted or the rolls. The only thing that was good was the downs,” says Kim.
“But I can be proud that I finished as high as I could’ve today, and it was enough for 15th.”
Kimberley has a full schedule ahead of her, also taking place in K1 and C1.

Sam Leaver demonstrated his pace early on the course. Despite losing time in the latter split, he secured 16th place and safely advanced.
Completing the line-up, Lois Leaver finished 27th, ensuring every British athlete qualified through the opening round.
With a strong set of results on day one, the British team head into the weekend’s kayak
cross event in a promising position, carrying momentum and medal opportunities into the heats.
Before then, the kayak events will be taking place tomorrow with the team events giving more chances for another World Championship medal.
All racing will be available to watch live on the Planet Canoe YouTube Channel for members.
