On 26th April, the Race to the Castle in Nottinghamshire brought together over 300 paddlers from 14 different countries around the world, uniting adventurers, competitors, and enthusiasts on the River Trent for an unforgettable 40km journey.
From the starting line beneath the Suspension Bridge, past the City Ground and onto the majestic Newark Castle, every moment of the race was filled with energy, excitement, and camaraderie.
A dot-watching tracker system, supported by Paddle UK, was introduced to the event this year which allowed spectators to follow the race in real-time, bringing an added layer of excitement and acted as a key tool for paddlers themselves to track their progress, their competitors, and receive virtual support from those following along online.
It was a true test of endurance, strategy, and determination. The course featured five portages designed to challenge the paddlers, and provided stunning views of the River Trent’s winding path through the countryside.
As paddlers moved closer to the finish line at Newark Castle, spectators were glued to their screens, cheering for their favourite competitors and seeing the race unfold in real-time.
Each finisher received a well-earned medal, which represented not only their physical achievement but also their mental resilience.
Race to the Castle isn’t just about competition — it’s about community. It’s about sharing a passion for paddleboarding and the outdoors with others who understand the thrill of chasing a challenge. It’s about pushing yourself, finding new limits, and celebrating achievements with fellow adventurers. Multiple categories make the event accessible to both seasoned athletes and those looking for a more relaxed paddle experience.
The celebrations didn’t stop at the finish line. After the race, paddlers gathered at Welbeck Hall, where they could unwind, share stories, and bask in the collective triumph of the weekend. Sunday’s social paddles, demo day, yoga and a team Sunday Lunch kept the energy high, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy the sport in a more informal setting.
A special thank you goes out to Newark Town Council & Newark and Sherwood District Council for their continued support in making Race to the Castle a reality. Their partnership helped ensure a smooth and successful event, providing the infrastructure and community engagement that made this year’s race possible.
Newark Castle served as a stunning finish line, and the towns enthusiasm and welcoming spirit helped create an unforgettable atmosphere for all involved.
