Looking for a new challenge for your paddling? Why not try canoe slalom? The Paddle UK Slalom Committee share how you can give it a try this spring.
What is canoe slalom?
Essentially, canoe slalom is a test of your boat handling skills. Can you get your boat down the river while going through a set of ‘gates’ on the way? If you touch or miss any gates, penalty seconds get added to your score. It is against the clock, but also a personal challenge.
Can you improve during the day? At any event there’ll be someone at any event who can help and offer advice – just ask.

You may have seen our Team GB athletes racing at the Paris Olympics, but entry-level slaloms (Division 4) take place on much gentler water so are suitable for most paddlers. This spring, there are Division 4 competitions across the county.
Come along to an event:
- 26/27 April – Alva (Central Scotland), Oughtibridge (Sheffield), Nene (Northampton)
- 3/4 May – Marple (near Stockport)
- 10/11 May – Llandysul (S Wales), Wagon Lane (Bingley/Bradford)
- 17/18 May – Langham Farm (Somerset)
- 24-26 May – Shepperton (Surrey), Cardiff Bay
At this level you don’t need a special boat, a general purpose kayak is fine – you also need your paddle, and to wear a buoyancy aid and helmet.
