Joe Clarke won his second medal of the Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross World Championships as he claimed men’s kayak team bronze with Ben Haylett and Jonny Dickson.
Clarke and Haylett responded brilliantly to help the team onto the podium having missed out on progressing in the individual heats.
The women’s team finished seventh, while all three paddlers, Lois Leaver, Kimberley Woods and Nikita Setchell, made it through to the individual semi-finals.
In the men’s team final, Joe Clarke led the British trio off ahead of Ben then Jonny, in an impressive demonstration in team racing.
But it was only France who could better the early standard, and having sat in silver medal position for most of the event, it was ultimately to be the bronze for Great Britain with the podium split by just one-tenth of a second.
France claimed gold with Japan 0.06 seconds back in an historic silver and Great Britain just 0.04 seconds further behind.
The performance came after the men’s kayak heats, where Dickson was the fourth-fastest qualifier into the semi-finals.
Clarke was just three positions and 0.27 seconds off a place in the next round, while Haylett picked up a 50-second penalty early on to mean he finished in 67th and did not progress.
Clarke said: “I was able to push up and get the guys in and set the tone for the run. It was a great run, but there were such tight margins in it.”
Haylett added: “I had a bit of a moment after the heats, took myself away and saw my family and reset. I just wanted to approach it with a clean slate and just stick to the plan, work for the boys and try to get Jonny to the finish as fast as we could.”
Dickson said: “I think we needed the finish line to come a few metres earlier, we definitely lost it at the bottom, but I think we did a really good job.”
Woods led off the British trio with Lois Leaver and Nikita Setchell, and the team were up at the first time check.
However, a collision on the main wave, proved costly and they dropped down the rankings.
Despite a clean run in a time of 112.68, Great Britain finished in seventh place.
Earlier in the day, all three had made it through to the women’s kayak individual finals.
Leaver led the way with the fourth-fastest time of the day, with Woods in 19th despite picking up a two-second penalty.
Setchell made it into the next round with a time of 104.82 to finish 27th.
Woods will be back in action tomorrow with five other paddlers in the canoe semi-finals and finals
before the kayak semi-finals and finals take place on Friday.
