A young British team gained invaluable international racing experience at the Olympic Hopes Regatta in Račice, Czech Republic over the weekend, with athletes from across the age groups testing themselves against some of the best junior paddlers in the world.
A Final Performances
The standout result of the weekend came in the K1 Men U17 500m, where Tom Hatton produced a superb performance to claim silver, finishing second in a world-class field. Teammate Olivier Mazur also made the A final, placing ninth.
Hatton then teamed up with Sam Dickson, Mazur and Freddie Heard in the K4 Men U17 500m, with the crew narrowly missing the podium in fourth place.
On the women’s side, Annie Bates gained double A-final experience in the K1 Women U17 500m and 1000m, finishing ninth in both, while Ruth Shephard (K1 Women U15 1000m – seventh) and Dianora De Bilio (K1 Women U16 1000m – fourth) both delivered strong showings in their age groups. Sam Dickson added to his A-final tally with an eighth in the K1 Men U17 1000m.
B Final Highlights
Britain also made its mark in the B finals, with Dianora De Bilio second in the K1 Women U16 200m and third in the K1 Women U16 500m, completing a busy and consistent weekend.
Charlotte Fulford-Perez showed speed over 200m, finishing fourth in the K1 Women U17 200m, before taking sixth in the 500m. Isabella Keane gained valuable C1 experience, finishing fourth in the C1 Women U16 200m and fifth in the 500m.
In the men’s, Freddie Heard raced to sixth in the K1 Men U16 500m B final, while the new pairing of Freddy Fowler-Rimell and Arthur Hunter-Hopkins finished ninth in the K2 Men U16 500m. In the longer distances, Matilda Burton placed sixth in the K1 Women U15 1000m B final.
C Final Efforts
Further experience came in the C finals, with Imogen Field placing fifth in K1 Women U15 200m and Matilda Burton finishing seventh in K1 Women U15 500m. The men also raced strongly with Thomas Patterson finishing fifth during the K1 Men U16 500m, Doogal Barnett coming in eighth in the K1 Men U15 1000m, and Freddy Fowler-Rimell finishing eighth in his K1 Men U16 1000m race.
Earlier Rounds
The semi-finals were just as competitive, in the K2 Women U16 500m, both pairings of Sienna Green and Ruth Shephard finishing seventh, as well as Madison McKernan and Imogen Field coming ninth, gaining strong race exposure. Arthur Hunter-Hopkins also reached the K1 Men U16 1000m semi-final, finishing eighth.
In the heats, the K4 Women U17 500m crew of McKernan, Burton, Field and Shephard finished eighth, while younger paddlers including McKernan, Green, Barnett, Smith and others gained vital international experience across their age groups and distances.
A Valuable Step on the Pathway
The Račice regatta once again underlined the importance of the Olympic Hopes event as a development stepping stone, with Britain’s juniors showing their potential on the international stage. From Hatton’s silver medal to multiple A, B and C finals across the team, the experience will be key as these athletes continue their progression towards senior competition.
